They say JLo had “it”, maybe even Kim Kardashian. “It” is a buttock enlargement with buttock implants or the famous Brazilian butt lift (which may become one of the great misnomers in cosmetic surgery).
Attractive breast, bellies and buttocks are among the most important characteristics of female attractiveness, at least as measured by the number of corrections and questions to our practice of Plastic Surgery in Mississippi, USA.
As far as breasts and butts are concerned, bigger is not necessarily better. True attractiveness depends on the shape of buttocks, breasts and abdomens and their natural harmony.
It follows from the last statement that there must be an aesthetic ideal in terms of size and shape of the buttocks (with some cultural variation – rather petite in Asians, more moderate in Caucasians, wider in Latinas, more projection in African-Americans, Indians somewhere in the middle often close to Asian / Caucasian women in their preferences), like there is an aesthetic ideal for the female breast.
While breasts and bellies can be reshaped relatively reliably with implants, lifting, fat transfer, liposuction and tummy tucks, plastic surgeons for the longest time could not get a good handle on the buttocks. Buttock implants, which were the first idea to come to mind, in their early days were devilish devices with a ridiculously high complication rate compared to breast implants. This situation has changed for the better in recent years with the advent of improved implants (at least outside the U.S.) and a better understanding of the appropriate surgical techniques.
Buttock implants are advantageous if the buttocks are already close to the aesthetic ideal and just lack projection when viewed from the side. This is again similar to the use of breast implants which are indicated to enlarge small, but otherwise aesthetically perfect breasts. The lifting achieved by buttocks implants is rather minimal and they only improve the shape by providing more projection. In other words, buttock implants are somewhat one-dimensional.
When is a buttock lift now beneficial? Again, in analogy to the breast lift, buttock lifting is an option if the buttocks sag (again, the medical term is ptosis). Unfortunately, the analogy does not end here – as it is the case for breast lifts, buttock lifting requires incisions and excisions leaving scars. We perform most buttock lifts in our practice of Plastic Surgery in Mississippi, USA, to correct the effects of aging in the 60 + group or after massive weight loss. In the latter group, the buttock lift is performed as part of a lower body lift.
The Brazilian Butt Lift, which has nothing to do with lifting the buttocks, but is all about gluteal reshaping and sculpting, finally breaks the analogy to breast implants in an ingenious way. Just as Michelangelo saw the sculpture and not a stone block in front of him, the Brazilian butt lift approximates an aesthetic ideal by reducing excess with liposuction and augmenting deficiency with fat transfer – hence gluteal shaping and sculpting. The resulting scars are only a few millimeters in size, except when the Brazilian Butt Lift is combined with Mendieta’s Miami Thong Lift, which hides small incision in the buttock crease and folds. The risks of the procedure are only slightly larger than a standard liposuction with a total aspirate of less than 4L. While the Brazilian butt lift requires an increased operative time compared to buttock implants, this remains within reasonable limits if the fat harvesting and transfer technologies advanced enough as it is the case in our plastic surgery practice in Mississippi, USA. Using the body’s own fat instead of silicone implants results in very natural “look and feel” and an overall recovery similar to a larger outpatient liposuction.
Warning – looks great in swimsuits, but can lead to lasting effects on those around you!
